Fowler Creek Park Community Update

Dear Neighbors,
We're pleased to report
some good news in this update!
Last month, we wrote to
you with the report that construction of Fowler Creek Park may be delayed due to the
pending service reductions and budget cuts throughout the city. We asked you to
write to District 8 Councilmember Cortese to voice and provide him with your support.
We received an excellent response from you.
This week, we received
an update from Councilmember Cortese's office that they met with Ed Shikada (Deputy City
Manager), Scott Reese (Deputy Director, PRNS), and Katy Jensen (Public Works Manager) last
week to discuss moving forward on the Master Plan for Fowler Creek Park (which was approved in October
2003).
In the meeting, Dave
sought and received agreement to start project design for the park immediately.
The City Staff was asked to investigate a few different funding sources that
Dave had thought of. While there is no firm date for when the bid documents would be
ready or when the construction drawings would be ready, the obstacles towards getting the
design moving have been removed.
Separately, we asked
why Fowler Creek Park wasn't mentioned in any of the budget documents. Dave Cortese
had caught this apparent oversight and requested City Staff to make the necessary changes.
Staff explained that since the source of funds for this project is not part of the
General Fund, this was the reason for the exclusion at this time. In the June 15,
2003 City Council Meeting, Dave inquired about Fowler Creek Park again. Staff said
(on the record) that the budget document didn't need to be changed at this juncture in
order for the project to move forward.
Additionally,
Councilmember Cortese's office asked us to communicate that Dave will continue to work
closely and proactively with the City Manager's Office to get Phase One of Fowler Creek Park started. His office also
encourages the tremendous community advocacy that they have seen for this project and asks
the community to continue to write to his office at dave.cortese@sanjoseca.gov
with your comments and to also contact the following members of City Staff with your
comments and concerns:
Sara Hensley, Parks,
Recreation, & Neighborhood Services Director
sara.hensley@sanjoseca.gov
Ed Shikada, Deputy City
Manager
ed.shikada@sanjoseca.gov
We spoke with Ed
Shikada a couple of weeks ago, and he definitely welcomes your questions and comments
about this project.
Please forward this
note to your neighbors and ask them to sign up on our web site. This project seems
to be moving again, and we need to keep taking the necessary steps towards realizing our
dream for a much needed and long overdue park in our community. We will do our best
to keep you updated. Thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Friends of Fowler Creek
Park
